TMS for Motor Rigidity & Bradykinesia

Reducing stiffness and improving movement speed by stimulating the supplementary motor area and primary motor cortex.

Parkinson's Disease is characterized by a loss of dopamine-producing neurons, which leads to over-inhibition in the brain's motor circuits. This results in bradykinesia (slowness of movement), rigidity, and postural instability. While levodopa remains the gold standard, many patients experience "off-periods" or side effects like dyskinesia.

TMS offers a non-pharmacological way to modulate these circuits. By applying high-frequency excitatory pulses to the Motor Cortex (M1) and Supplementary Motor Area (SMA), TMS can boost cortical excitability, helping the brain overcome the "braking" signals and allowing for smoother, faster movement initiation.

Studies have shown that repetitive TMS can improve walking speed and reduce the "freezing of gait" that often occurs in advanced Parkinson's patients.

Motor Symptoms TMS can address:

Bradykinesia

Increasing the speed of movement initiation and execution by priming the motor cortex.

Rigidity

Reducing muscle stiffness and improving limb mobility through targeted cortical modulation.

Gait Instability

Improving balance and reducing the risk of falls by enhancing motor network coordination.

TMS for Parkinson's Tremor

Disrupting the pathological oscillations in the thalamo-cortical loops that drive resting tremors.

The "pill-rolling" resting tremor is one of the most visible symptoms of Parkinson's. It is driven by abnormal rhythmic firing deep within the brain (the basal ganglia and thalamus) that synchronizes with the motor cortex.

TMS can intervene by delivering pulses at specific frequencies that de-synchronize these pathological rhythms. By targeting the motor cortex and premotor areas, TMS acts as a "pace-setter," helping to reset the overactive motor circuits and diminish the intensity of the tremor.

01

Clinical Assessment

Dr. Amin distinguishes between resting tremor and other types of tremor to ensure the optimal stimulation frequency is used.

02

Targeted Pulsing

Precise pulses are delivered to the motor cortex to interrupt the synchronization of tremor-driving circuits.

03

Synergistic Effect

TMS can often help manage tremors during "off-periods" when medication effectiveness is at its lowest.

TMS for Parkinson's Depression & Cognition

Addressing the "non-motor" symptoms of Parkinson's by stimulating the prefrontal cortex.

Parkinson's Disease is not just a motor disorder. Up to 50% of patients experience depression, and many develop cognitive changes such as slowed thinking, executive dysfunction, and memory issues. These symptoms often have a greater impact on quality of life than the motor symptoms themselves.

TMS is FDA-cleared for Depression. By targeting the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC), TMS can re-energize language and executive networks that have become under-active. This not only improves mood but can also enhance cognitive processing speed and mental clarity in Parkinson's patients.

SymptomHow TMS Helps
DepressionBoosts serotonin and dopamine signaling in the prefrontal reward circuits.
Executive FunctionEnhances connectivity in the brain's "control" networks to improve planning and attention.
Mental FatigueReduces "brain fog" by increasing overall cortical excitability and neural efficiency.

★★★★★
I've been dealing with depression and PTSD for years and Dr. Amin's TMS Therapy has honestly saved my life. I'm someone who does not respond well to depression medication, so TMS was a godsend for me. I went from crying for no reason almost every day to feeling more stable and even optimistic. Dr. Amin is really invested in my mental health and Charlie, the TMS technician, is very helpful in making the treatments go by quickly and swiftly. I don't even want to imagine what my life would have been like without these treatments these past few years.

I've been experiencing night terrors for a few years. I called Dr Amin immediately and he called me back right away. He told me he could help me. He came up with a medical plan with his diagnosis and that's what we're doing now. Dr. Amin is not aggressive and started very cautious with treatment because of my family history. Dr. Amin calls me to follow up on how I'm feeling. I highly recommend his practice. They answer in a timely manner. Everyone is very nice.

Dr. Amin saved me from my horrible OCD. Thank god for him. I originally went to him for a second opinion. I decided to take a leap of faith and start TMS after I had a bad OCD episode. It was rough in the beginning when I first started TMS but I persevered my way through and I'm so glad I did. I'm just about half way through and I see so many benefits already. I have my life back. I feel such relief — I can rationalize my thoughts and emotions so much better now. Overall I'm a better person. Thank you x1000 Dr. Amin!!!

I have been a patient with NJ Healthy Minds for the past couple of years, and choosing them has been one of the best decisions I've made for myself. Everyone I've encountered has been kind, compassionate, supportive, and consistent. The passion and care they show truly reflect their purpose and the positive impact they make in people's lives every day. I am not the same person I was when I first came to them. Their support has made a tremendous difference in my life, and for that I am deeply grateful. Dr Amin & staff, you rock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Parkinson's TMS FAQs

No, TMS is not a replacement for levodopa or other primary Parkinson's medications. It is a powerful adjunctive therapy designed to enhance motor function and reduce symptoms that medications fail to control.
TMS is particularly effective at improving gait (walking), reducing freezing of gait, alleviating rigidity, and treating the severe depression that frequently accompanies Parkinson's disease.
Yes, up to 50% of Parkinson's patients suffer from depression. TMS is FDA-cleared for depression and is incredibly effective at lifting mood safely without adding more systemic drugs to the patient's regimen.
Depending on the primary symptoms, the magnetic coil is positioned over the motor cortex to improve movement, or over the prefrontal cortex to treat mood and cognitive symptoms.
TMS is very well tolerated. The most common side effect is transient, mild scalp discomfort. It does not cause the dyskinesias (involuntary movements) associated with long-term levodopa use.
