The Neurological Impact of Trauma

PTSD is an acquired, physical injury to the brain's fear-processing circuitry.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder alters the physical structure and functional connectivity of the brain. When trauma occurs, the amygdala (fear center) becomes hyper-reactive, while the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (the area responsible for regulating the amygdala and recognizing safety) becomes suppressed.

This communication breakdown traps the brain in a perpetual state of threat detection. This is why individuals with PTSD may react to non-threatening stimuli as if they are life-threatening, and why cognitive therapy alone is sometimes insufficient—the biological alarm system must be reset.

TMS addresses the physical hardware of the brain, giving talk therapy and processing techniques a healthier space to take root.

Brain mapping of PTSD

Resetting the Alarm

Using targeted magnetic stimulation to restore communication between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala.

Patient receiving TMS therapy

By delivering specific magnetic pulses to the prefrontal cortex, TMS strengthens the neural pathways responsible for "top-down" emotional regulation. As neuroplasticity occurs, the prefrontal cortex regains its ability to down-regulate the hyperactive amygdala.

Additionally, TMS can be applied using inhibitory frequencies the right side of the brain to directly dampen the overactive fear response, making patients feel physically safer in their bodies.

01

Regulatory Support

Enhancing the "executive" areas of the brain to regain control over emotional flooding.

02

Fear Dampening

Down-modulating the deep brain structures stuck in perpetual "fight or flight."

03

Trauma Processing

Creating a calmer neural baseline enables patients to process trauma more effectively in therapy.

PTSD Symptoms Targeted by TMS

Addressing the core experiential clusters of the disorder.

Hyperarousal

Reducing startle responses, chronic edginess, irritability, and the inability to relax in safe environments.

Intrusive Memories

Helping to disconnect the overwhelming emotional distress tied to intrusive thoughts and flashbacks.

Avoidance & Numbing

Alleviating the depressive-like symptoms of emotional bluntness and total avoidance of triggering stimuli.

The Benefits of Non-Systemic Care

Why Consider TMS for PTSD?

A physiological approach to a disorder that medications struggle to reach.

Limits Chemical Reliance

PTSD is incredibly complex to treat with single medications. TMS offers a powerful tool that doesn't require adding another pill to an existing regimen.

Passive Treatment

TMS does not require a patient to actively relive trauma during the magnetic therapy. You simply recline and let the stimulation work.

Synergistic Outcomes

By restoring prefrontal control, patients consistently find they are far more capable of engaging in traditional EMDR or exposure-based therapies.

I've been dealing with depression and PTSD for years and Dr. Amin's TMS Therapy has honestly saved my life. I'm someone who does not respond well to depression medication, so TMS was a godsend for me. I went from crying for no reason almost every day to feeling more stable and even optimistic. Dr. Amin is really invested in my mental health and Charlie, the TMS technician, is very helpful in making the treatments go by quickly and swiftly. I don't even want to imagine what my life would have been like without these treatments these past few years.

I've been experiencing night terrors for a few years. I called Dr Amin immediately and he called me back right away. He told me he could help me. He came up with a medical plan with his diagnosis and that's what we're doing now. Dr. Amin is not aggressive and started very cautious with treatment because of my family history. Dr. Amin calls me to follow up on how I'm feeling. I highly recommend his practice. They answer in a timely manner. Everyone is very nice.

Dr. Amin saved me from my horrible OCD. Thank god for him. I originally went to him for a second opinion. I decided to take a leap of faith and start TMS after I had a bad OCD episode. It was rough in the beginning when I first started TMS but I persevered my way through and I'm so glad I did. I'm just about half way through and I see so many benefits already. I have my life back. I feel such relief — I can rationalize my thoughts and emotions so much better now. Overall I'm a better person. Thank you x1000 Dr. Amin!!!

I have been a patient with NJ Healthy Minds for the past couple of years, and choosing them has been one of the best decisions I've made for myself. Everyone I've encountered has been kind, compassionate, supportive, and consistent. The passion and care they show truly reflect their purpose and the positive impact they make in people's lives every day. I am not the same person I was when I first came to them. Their support has made a tremendous difference in my life, and for that I am deeply grateful. Dr Amin & staff, you rock.

Frequently Asked Questions

TMS for PTSD FAQs

TMS helps alleviate intrusive thoughts, hyperarousal, severe anxiety, and the emotional numbness associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by modulating fear-processing centers.
Trauma causes the amygdala to become hyper-reactive. TMS stimulates the prefrontal cortex to strengthen its regulatory control over the amygdala, helping to dampen exaggerated fear responses.
No, the procedure is non-invasive and painless. You may feel a slight tapping sensation on the scalp, but it is well-tolerated by patients with severe trauma histories.
Absolutely. In fact, combining TMS with trauma-focused therapies like EMDR or CBT often enhances the effectiveness of both, as TMS primes the brain for learning and neuroplasticity.
A standard protocol involves 30 to 36 sessions over about 6 weeks, though Dr. Amin will customize the duration based on your specific symptom severity and response.
