Advanced TMS for Psychiatric Disorders
Treatment Overview

A New Era in Mental Health Care

For decades, the standard of care in psychiatry has relied heavily on systemic medications and talk therapy. While effective for many, a significant portion of patients experience inadequate relief or intolerable side effects, leading to a frustrating cycle of trial and error.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) represents a paradigm shift. By using precise magnetic fields to stimulate underactive networks in the brain—such as the prefrontal cortex in depression—TMS offers a targeted, biological intervention without the systemic effects of medication.

At our Edison, NJ clinic, Dr. Ritesh Amin provides specialized TMS protocols for a range of psychiatric conditions, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and PTSD. We are committed to offering the most advanced, evidence-based tools available to achieve lasting remission.

★★★★★
I've been dealing with depression and PTSD for years and Dr. Amin's TMS Therapy has honestly saved my life. I'm someone who does not respond well to depression medication, so TMS was a godsend for me. I went from crying for no reason almost every day to feeling more stable and even optimistic. Dr. Amin is really invested in my mental health and Charlie, the TMS technician, is very helpful in making the treatments go by quickly and swiftly. I don't even want to imagine what my life would have been like without these treatments these past few years.

I've been experiencing night terrors for a few years. I called Dr Amin immediately and he called me back right away. He told me he could help me. He came up with a medical plan with his diagnosis and that's what we're doing now. Dr. Amin is not aggressive and started very cautious with treatment because of my family history. Dr. Amin calls me to follow up on how I'm feeling. I highly recommend his practice. They answer in a timely manner. Everyone is very nice.

Dr. Amin saved me from my horrible OCD. Thank god for him. I originally went to him for a second opinion. I decided to take a leap of faith and start TMS after I had a bad OCD episode. It was rough in the beginning when I first started TMS but I persevered my way through and I'm so glad I did. I'm just about half way through and I see so many benefits already. I have my life back. I feel such relief — I can rationalize my thoughts and emotions so much better now. Overall I'm a better person. Thank you x1000 Dr. Amin!!!

I have been a patient with NJ Healthy Minds for the past couple of years, and choosing them has been one of the best decisions I've made for myself. Everyone I've encountered has been kind, compassionate, supportive, and consistent. The passion and care they show truly reflect their purpose and the positive impact they make in people's lives every day. I am not the same person I was when I first came to them. Their support has made a tremendous difference in my life, and for that I am deeply grateful. Dr Amin & staff, you rock.

Dr Amin is a very caring doctor. He helped me regain my peace via TMS therapy. He took whatever time was required to explain in detail what to expect. Unlike most in his field, he returns calls with urgency. I love having him as my doctor.

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Find quick answers to some of the most common questions our patients ask about this treatment.

How does TMS differ for Depression vs. OCD?

Different psychiatric conditions require stimulating different neural networks. For depression, we typically target the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. For OCD, we often target deeper structures like the supplementary motor area or the anterior cingulate cortex, using specialized coils and different pulse frequencies.

Can I continue my current medications during TMS?

Yes. In fact, most patients continue their current psychiatric medications during their TMS course. Dr. Amin will carefully review your medication list, as certain medications can affect your motor threshold, but TMS is safely used as an augmentative therapy.

Is TMS covered by insurance for psychiatric conditions?

TMS for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is covered by almost all major commercial insurances and Medicare. Coverage for OCD is rapidly expanding. Off-label treatments for severe Anxiety or PTSD may require self-pay or special prior authorizations. Our billing team will handle all insurance verifications for you.

How long before I notice an improvement in my mood or anxiety?

While responses vary, many patients begin noticing subtle improvements—such as better sleep, increased energy, or "lighter" moods—around the second or third week of daily treatment (sessions 10-15). The most significant changes often occur toward the end of the treatment course.

How do I know if I am a candidate for TMS?

If you suffer from depression, anxiety, PTSD, or OCD and have not found adequate relief from standard medications or talk therapy, you are likely an excellent candidate for TMS. A consultation with Dr. Amin will confirm.

Is there any downtime after a TMS session?

Zero downtime. Because TMS requires no anesthesia or sedation, you can immediately drive, return to work, and resume all normal daily activities the moment your 20-minute session ends.
